Configuring email links in Google Chrome to open mail.google.com

Have you ever clicked on an email link on a webpage (e.g. "Contact Parents") and your computer tried to launch the Mail app instead of just opening a new email composition in GMail?

This is usually a configuration issue within Google Chrome.  Here are the steps to resolve it:
  1. On the tab in which you read your emails (https://mail.google.com), look for a double-diamond in the address bar that allows you to select that email handler to be mail.google.com.
  2. If the menu is there, select "Allow".  If it is not there, then you've already taken that step.
  3. Check the Chrome Settings to see if mail.google.com is the default email handler by opening a new tab and going to the following URL: chrome://settings/handlers
mail.google.com should be listed as the Default
